The former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder criticised European Union last Saturday for “becoming a hostage of nationalistic, anti-Russia interests of individual EU member states”.

Schroeder then said more precisely that who he meant were “the authorities of Poland and leaders of several other EU member states”.

The former chancellor, who currently is the head of a German-Russian company constructing the Nord Stream pipeline (between Russia and Germany through the Baltic Sea), was sharing his opinions in Moscow during a meeting presenting the Russian edition of his diaries ‘Decisions. My life in politics’.

The meeting took place in Moscow’s Hotel President, owned by the Chancellery of the President of Russia, and among the participants was Dmitry Medvedev, the first vice-prime minister of Russia, who is named as Vladimir Putin’s successor in the Kremlin.

Medvedev, who also is the chairman of Gazprom’s board of directors, is the author of the preface to Schroeder’s book.

“EU should reject primitive interests”

The former chancellor also said that the EU should reject those primitive nationalistic interests, as they are an obstacle in European integration and improving relations with Russia.

Mr. Schroeder also criticised the plan to place elements of US anti-missile shield in Central Europe: ‘It’s being presented as a matter between Poland, Czech Republic and USA, whereas it is a matter of the whole EU’.

According to the former head of German government, such perspective is as illogical, as saying that the problem of Polish meat export to Russia is somethinng on a European level.

Mr. Schroeder emphasised that some EU member states are using the EU to solving their own problems. ‘It is detrimental for the European integration. For the benefit of Europe, one should put individual countries’ interests aside’ – he pointed out.

The Russian media in their reviews of Schoder’s book note, that he warns about the danger that is in the ‘turn to nationalism, observd in Poland, which is unsteerable, which may cause harm to German-Russian relation, which would be disastrous for Europe’.

‘Emotions in the Baltic states and Poland need to be cooled down’ – reported the Russian media citing Mr. Schroeder.

Hi, I am back! 😉
A portrait of Gerhard Schröder was recently put up in the German chancellery: Jörg Immendorf – the artist – pictured Schröder in gold and among apes! In the foreground you can see a broken statue which looks like a TV camera (in my eyes) and a Federal Eagle which looks a bit crooked and hackly.
That’s exactly the way I see Schröder: He is dazzler and opportunist! He would even sell his grandmother to Putin if this served his personal purposes.

“Money, money, money” …sang those pretty Swedish girls so long ago

“Money it’s a crime, share it fairly but don’t take a slice of my pie” … sometimes still sung by aged Englishmen when reminding us that human nature rarely changes.

There is no government in Europe that so abuses base nationalism for it own ends as the Russian one. One of Europe’s main functions in this world, as one of the few really free continents, has to be a place where democratic ideals are discussed, developed and spread throughout the world. No doubt the corrupt leadership in Russia have many reasons to feel threatened by a country such as Poland that understands their “modus operandi”. Poland through the Solidarity movement was instrumental in breaking up the “mighty” Soviet empire and all sympathiser of the old soviet order, the cheka, the NKVD and the KGB fear outspoken truth above all else.

Schroder can criticise Poland and cuddle up closer to his Russian roubles if he likes, but let him not confuse the good of Europe with the good of his pipeline deal with the Russians. The hand on the oil tap can move in the “off” direction as well as the”on”. Russia has to be negotiated with using consistent and coordinated methods, as a single European body. Russia is so eager to split European unity – do a seperate oil deal with the Germans, hinder Polish exports – European leaders need to wise up. Shroder’s time is past, Europe needs to move on. For sure Russia is important, but let’s also ditch the naivete – the government in Russia overseen by the “siloviki” is potentially the most dangerous there’s been since comrade Stalin departed.

WHAT KISS MYERS SAYS:

Gerhard should reject primitive interests

Kiss Myers said that the former chancellor should reject his primitive egoistic interests, and form an obstacle in the latter’s integration and improving relations with Russia.

Kiss Myers also criticised the plan to place elements of German-Russian pipes in Central Baltic: ‘It’s being presented as a matter between German pipe, Russian gas and screws, whereas it is a matter of the whole EU’.

According to Kiss Myers, such perspective is as illogical, as saying that the issue of Russian gas export to Germany is something on an individual level.

Mr. Myers emphasised that some EU member states’ former chancellors are using their post to solve their greed problems. ‘It is detrimental for the European integration. For the benefit of Europe, one should put individual interests aside’ – he pointed out.

Europe’s media, in their reviews of the movie “Ger-Die-Hard 4.0”, note that it warns about the danger that is in the ‘turn to gasionalism, observed in Mr Schroeder, which is unsteerable, which may cause harm to German-Polish relation, which would be disastrous for Europe’.

‘Emotions in the Baltic pipes and gases need to be cooled down’ – reported the media citing Mr. Myers.

Hello, gentlemen

Silke, my first reaction to Gerhard Schröder preaching about “primitive” or “individual” interests (that are not his own) was to write kiss my ass. Then I thought Polishpress might take it as directed to him, not to GS, so I took the original translation and rephrased it. (“Kiss My-Ers” remained though, rephrased as well.)

Polishpress, I think you might have a load of new work: there’s Krzemiński’s text in Polityka‘s latest issue.
